Our New Sefer Torah
Sunday, May 5, 2002 was a new beginning for Congregation Beth Shalom,
as members watched the first strokes inscribed in our newly commissioned
Sefer Torah Scroll. Young
and old were privileged to witness the start of this very important
mitzvah, which is the last of the 613 commandments, to write a Sefer
Torah in one's lifetime.
The morning included "The Living Torah, an interactive
workshop for all ages," which offered hands-on demonstrations
and activities for adults and children with Zerach Greenfield. Rabbi
Zimmerman conducted a special Torah study session. Everyone witnessed
the first words being inscribed in honor of our sefer donors, as
Sofer Zerach Greenfield wrote the first words in our new Sefer Troah.
This year-long project will include additional informational programs
about
how a Sefer Torah is written, as well as Torah Study sessions.

Our
Torah is being written by Rav
Shmuel Leibovitch of Bnai Brak, Israel an ordained scribe. When
the Sefer
Torah is completed, we will celebrate with a siyum, at which
time everyone who has participated in this program will have an
opportunity to touch the sofer's quill and recite the holy words
as he writes, thus participating directly in this great mitzvah
and fulfilling the 613th commandment.
